SDAGO is in the second year of our OrgelKids Initiative, seeking to introduce the pipe organ to students of all ages using a kit organ that allows them hands-on experience with the organ and how it works. Our organ was built for us by JF Nordlie Company under license from OrgelKids.
The OrgelKids organ is in the midst of a busy fall season, making appearances in numerous contexts. At the beginning of September it visited Christ the King elementary 3rd graders for the second year in a row as they were learning about the instruments of the orchestra. In October, it made an appearance at Our Savior’s Lutheran’s Sunday and Wednesday schools, which combined the OrgelKids instrument with a tour of the larger instrument in the Sanctuary. It was well received by parents and students, and was a wonderful connection builder for the younger generations and the history of music making in the church.
Finally, at the end of October OrgelKids was at Eugene Field A+ Elementary, where 4th graders focused on building and playing the little instrument in several rotations. It also made an appearance on Halloween during our Pipescreams event at First Lutheran Church. Looking forward to November, homeschoolers from the Kimball, Platte, and Gregory area will get to have a hands on experience with the OrgelKids organ, and it will travel to Patrick Henry Middle School. We are working with SD Arts Council to further connect it to schools in the Sioux Falls area.
OrgelKids is not only for a small group of presenters to use in the school classroom. As a professional organization, this is another resource SDAGO offers for members to use in a variety of settings, demonstrating not only the mechanism of the organ, but also basic music concepts as well as the physics of sound! We are happy to provide resources, training, and assistance.
SDAGO's OrgelKids team leader is Matthew Tylutki. Matt can be contacted at [email protected].
